Our 1st Anniversary was coming up and I was scouring the web for good ideas for a getaway. BLESS Groupon for having a deal on this hotel, because it turned out to be the most perfect weekend.
We stayed two nights at the Hotel Republic in downtown San Diego. Right when we walked into the lobby, I knew we made the right decision. It was hip, inviting, cozy, and the front desk assistant was so so nice. We arrived at our room to find a bottle of champagne, strawberries, and a hand-written note congratulating us on our anniversary (I mentioned briefly in my booking that it was our anniversary weekend!). How SWEET and THOUGHTFUL!?
The room itself was a dream. Cozy bed, HUGE shower, reading nook against the window, and local coffee pods stocked by the Keurig. Plus, we got to wear these amazing robes (free to use) and it made me feel like a princess.
Later that evening we had a romantic date at the roof-top bar The Nolen. Of course i mixed up the happy hour time and book a table right when it ended (such is life). We had a couple drinks and then went back down to sea level to have dinner at Berkeley Pizza. If you like deep dish, this is your place. I'm more of a thin crust gal, but I digress.
Back to the hotel we went to enjoy our champagne while cozied up in our robes (while watching Netflix on their Smart TV, praise!). Truly feeling like an old married couple, we convinced ourselves to go out to a club. That didn't last long, but at least we got out for a bit.
The next day was filled with bike riding around downtown San Diego. We took advantage of the first weekend that OFO bikes were in town, so they were free the whole weekend. It was such a fun, spontaneous activity that we didn't plan on. We biked to Seaport and all the way to Harbor Island to visit Jordan's parents at their jet ski company (San Diego Bay Adventures shameless plug). That evening we had tickets to see John Mulaney and I was SO stoked because he's my favorite comedian. After the event, the crowds came out of the building and it was almost impossible to get an Uber back to the hotel, so of course we found some OFO bikes and rode back!
Hotel Republic has these door hangs (you know, like the "Do Not Disturb" signs) that you can order room service off of and place on your door so that the next morning you have food delivered. So I checked off some boxes for breakfast the night before, and I was pleasantly surprised to a delicious (and a bit expensive, I will admit) breakfast the next morning. We drank our Keurig coffee, slept in, and came into work late that Monday.
It was a blissful weekend. I even stayed there again for a bachelorette weekend and I was SO stoked to be back. I can't recommend them enough.
The only downsides I can think of is that it's on the outskirts of downtown, so you really have to drive anywhere if you're looking to go to Gaslamp or Seaport. The other thing is that the walls were pretty paper-thin when it came to hearing hallway noise. Otherwise, an amazing room and even better service. I'm hoping to back next year for another staycation. One of my favorite things is exploring my own city. There's always new things to see and to try, so you really can't go wrong. Plus, who likes long drives or airports anyways?!
The best adventures are ahead,
